Susan Khalje Couture Class

Wednesday, January 25

Don't you just love the internet?

Last year, Gertie took a class (a workshop really)with Susan Khalje, and I remember thinking I would love to be in her suitcase, so she could take me with her. Gertie always gushes about Susan Khalje and how good she is with couture sewing and with good reason too. Just take a look at her website to discover more about this talented woman yourself.

6 days at her Couture Sewing School will set you back $995....ahem.....I'm not going to comment on that. I imagine you will learn alot in those 6 days, and you will treasure the experience. To get an idea of what those 6 days will be like, you can take a look at Gertie's blog, where she gave an insight into her time with Susan here, here, here, and here.

Now, even if I did have $995 in my piggy bank, which I can VERY MUCH ASSURE you I don't have, I would have had to swim across the Atlantic to attend her sewing school. Any other mode of transport will undoubtedly involve me re-mortgaging our house...I kid you not.

Fortunately, she is having a class on Craftsy, yes, the same people who brought you the Bombshell Dress via Gertie, and the price is a mighty affordable $79.99. I got an email in my box today saying there was currently a 50% discount on the course, so that makes it $39.99.  Not bad aye?

So in principle, you shell out $39.99, and you get this Vogue pattern posted to you

and then Susan teaches you how to make this dress using couture techniques. How cool is that? I am thinking very seriously of buying this class. You could probably buy books on couture sewing that will teach you the techniques, but if you, are like me, and you learn by observation, then this might be worth thinking about. Granted, it will be nothing compared to her Couture Sewing School, but for $39.99 (£26.51) I will gladly take the pattern and a couple of couture techniques, thank you very much.

Now if you will excuse me, I have some MAJOR financial decisions to make.

  1. Thanks for sharing this info! I had completely missed it in my inbox this morning. My sewing instructor takes classes with Susan all of the time and is constantly gushing about her. Seems to me like taking her online class would be a great way to distract you during your final days of pregnancy!

    1. It sure will. I won't be able to make the dress anytime soon anyways, so I shall watch the video until I can do everything in my sleep. I've started watching it, and I am so impressed already. So much to learn.

  2. That looks really interesting but I can't see a 50% offer, did they send you a code or something? I could do with all the help I can get........

    1. Louise, I've just forwarded the email I got from Craftsy to your hotmail address, which I got off your profile. Let me know if you received it, and if it worked.

  3. I subscribe to Craftsy and have taken the Bombshell course but have not received this email with the discount. I'll definitely get this class but waiting to see if I get the discount first.

    1. That's the same as me Suzy. I did get a newsletter from Craftsy yesterday but it didn't mention Susan's class! Gutted!

    1. now that is quite painful to know. lol. i have looked again though, and I cant see it for $25. do you think it was a mistake on their part?

    2. I checked last night and the $25 offer was gone. Maybe it was for a couple of hours?

    3. Yeah its possible. But all the same, I am still happy with the 50% discount. I have learned so much already, even though I have not started making the dress.

  7. I have been thinking about this class all day. I mean I do like the dress. And I'm a very visual person. And you can ask questions with craftsy. I think the fact that you wrote a post on it is even more of an omen that I should go ahead and take the deal.

  8. I signed up for it last night! They post the pattern out to you - thankfully I already have it because I live in Australia and it will probably take weeks! I've watched a couple of videos already - Susan is very charismatic and comfortable in front of the camera. You can ask her questions (I already have and she answered nearly straight away!) and can read all the other question that have already been asked. I'm really excited - we live in a small town that has no sewing classes available so this is the only way I can take a class.

    1. That is the same thing I thought. Susan seems so comfortable infront of the camera. I could not stop watching her in awe. I don't have the pattern, so I am still waiting for it. I won't be able to use it now anyways, so I don't mind the wait. I already feel so confident about tackling this project. lol

  9. Great timing dibs, thank you- I'd seen this in my inbox but my work internet has loads of hyper security and blocked the links where I could find out more. And then I forgot when I got home. I can think more about it now - don't we have till the end of the month?

    1. I don't know how long the discount is for Winnie. I must admit I did not read all the mail, I just clicked on the link immediately. I was that excited lol.

  10. I'm taking it and got the 50% discount in their newsletter. I think it's a good deal actually because just buying the pattern around here is going to set me back about €17-20 so for 20 more, I get a class with Suzan. I'm psyched!

    1. That was what I thought as well. Getting the physical pattern is such a plus, because then you can make the other versions as well, using the same methods.

  14. Great, thanks for sharing the info, off to have a look right now... I think a class is just what I need to actually get me making something instead of spending all my time reading blogs about what other people are making!
    Thanks,

  15. I have just bought this course in a moment of delicious spendthrift madness. it looks fantastic but I am concerned that my payment and membership was processed without any request for my postal address. It may be that free pattern is not available to uk customers. I have sent an email to craftsy to enquire - so I will let you know.

    Janice.

  16. Oh, I hope they sort it out Janice. When I booked mine, my address was requested, and an email was later sent to me saying that Vogue patterns would send the pattern directly to me in London. Do let me know how you get on with the query.

  17. I just signed up to Craftsy and got sent an email offering any class for $25 - the only one not included was... you guessed it! So, at the risk of being really cheeky, any chance of sharing in the email code too please? Without it, especially if the Post Office and customs add on an additional £14 between them like they did the only other time I've ordered anything from America (sewing machine feet)the price starts getting a bit too steep for me.
I'll send my email address direct to you in hopefulness! Thanks again for the info

  18. Update! I've just found an online link to the 1/2 price class offer via Frabjous Couture, thought this may help someone... I've signed up but can't find out how to give them my address to have the pattern sent (doh!)

    1. it was via frabjous couture that I picked up the link and am now worried that I have been phished. Unlike Dibs I was not asked for my address and was rather taken aback by how quickly the transaction went through. I have access to the online classes - but no mention of provision of a pattern or a request for my address !

      Janice.

    2. Mmm, just the same as me, didn't think of phishing and don't want to either! I was really surprised by how quick it went through too - only one page, and come to think of it I don't think I was asked for the security number on the back of the card which is usually standard practise (a good thing?). Hopefully, as we can both access the course on the site it will be OK - fingers crossed!
Apologies for hijacking your comments Dibs!

    3. Yes - sorry Dibs ! And heres hoping it will get sorted out for you and me Debbie ! Meanwhile, the online stuff looks great !

      Janice.

    4. no its alright, no hijacking has been done. I'd like to know what is going on regarding the address issue. That is really quite strange. Have you guys tried asking Frabjous Couture if her registration was the same?

      Delete
    5. Hadn't done that and I've just tried now, but it looks like a comment can't be left on the site unless you have a blogger account of some sort, there's no 'anonymous' option. So now I'm going to try emailing Marina at the address shown on her blog. Thanks for the suggestion :-)
Also, I emailed Hannah from Craftsy, who sent out the welcome email and I posted a question on the course questions section, the question has not even appeared yet, several hours later - may be something to do with the ime difference I suppose.
Thanks for your support Dibs, will keep you posted with any developments

    6. Update! I have just received an email from Hannah explaining there was an error on the site and that I should reply with my address and pattern size Yay! No doubt this will be the case for Janice too - so all's well that ends well (fingers crossed)...

    7. Yes Debbie - this was the case for me too ! I'm glad that it was sorted out so quickly. What a bargain we've got. Thank you Dibs ( and Frabjous Couture) for sharing the info. about the course.
