Beauty: Makeup books

Friday, May 23

I bought some make-up books guys. Those of you who follow me on instagram (@dibsandthemachine), would know how make-up obsessed I have become. I am not really a make-up girl, but I am learning, and so far I am having fun. Mr.Dibs calls it my war paint, and sometimes I agree. I rarely wear make-up to work. I would say in a month, I might wear it once to work. I am starting to make more and more of an effort with my appearance, after some of my friends staged an intervention.

I have spent countless hours on youtube, learning make-up application. What many of the self proclaimed make-up gurus on youtube don't tell you are the reasons they do what they do. So I am turning to the experts to tell me why I have to use a crease brush and a base brush. Are you a make up addict?.

Until this week, I never even knew there were so many books on make-up by make-up artists. I was looking for information on Kevin Aucoin, and realised he had written a number of books. Searching for those books online led me to other books by well known make-up artists and in true Dibs style, I ordered a couple, two of which arrived a few days ago. Just in time for the Bank holiday weekend. Make-up brushes at the ready!!

Its funny how I am only getting into make-up and the whole beauty thing in my mid thirties. I'm sure my mom will do a victory dance when she comes visiting this summer. She has been vocally disappointed in my lack of interest in all things make-up and beauty regiments. My mom is so beautiful, and I am nothing like her. I do like look abit like her, but not as much as my younger brother, who is her carbon copy, or as much as she would have wanted me to. She used to blame my dad for me not being breathtakingly beautiful. I have my dad's lips though, which I consider my best features. Take that, Mother!

Before you all rush to assure me that I am beautiful,  and that my mom is mean, please know that my mom loves me very much, and I am quite confident in my skin. I might not be as beautiful as my mom, who to be honest, judging from her old pictures, was quite the stunner, but I am not ugly either. And by the way, who has the right to call someone ugly? Everyone has something special in them that makes them beautiful to a certain number of people. I am the most beautiful woman in the world to Mr.Dibs(even though I think he only says that for the sake of peace and an happy life), and that is enough for me.

If you like make-up, what make brands do you use?

  1. You should definitely check out MAC makeup. Colours to suit ALL skin shades and it LASTS, not only once it's on your face but a little goes a long way so, even though I use the foundation everyday, a bottle can last me almost a full year. I love my MAC...you should book a trial with one of their artists on their counters.

    1. Ah the great MAC. When I just started, it was everything MAC. Of course not all of it suited my skin. Hahahahahaha. I go there every so often to browse. I am trying to build an eye shadow pallette with them now.

  2. I've always admired women who are comfortable in their skin without makeup, as I am not one of those. I started putting on makeup in high school - it was never a heavy colored one, but it did make me feel prettier and more self confident. I frequently have dark under-eye circles and as I get older (and tend to sleep less and less) those get darker and darker (sometimes looking like bruises, when I'm really tired), and having no foundation or at least concealer makes me really self conscious about it. So I put makeup every day.
Last year I discovered I was using wrong color palette, so I started experimenting with new colors and new brands, and during some initial phase I felt I was doing it all wrong, as I looked worse instead of looking healthier and prettier. I also discovered I was allergic to some of the makeup brands / products (those make my face swell in seconds), like Sephora's eye shadows.
I've heard MAC is excellent, but I haven't used it so far. My only advice is to try out the MaxFactor mascara 2000 Calories - the best I have ever used (and I tried a lot of different ones).

    1. Thanks Ana. I will definitely check out the MaxFactor mascara. I grew up with my stepmom who never used to wear makeup so it was not an issue in our house. But when i went to my mom for the holidays, she would try to get me into the whole stuff...which i did not really like. I am sure if o would have been raised by my mom, the story would have been very different. Lol

  3. hi dibs - you know im already all over your makeup craze via instagram :-) but I'll share this - Ive been somewhat a makeup fanatic for around 7 years now. at first i thought it was all about MAC & while I do love their products, they are pricey & some of them are quite unnecessary. i do invest in their great brushes, their eyeshadows & foundations, but the rest of it can be found at drugstore brand which is more economical & sometimes lasts longer too. look into the bourjois range....they actually manufacture the chanel range!!! their e/shadows are amazing, highly pigmented & long lasting, as well as their healthy mix serum foundation. Its truly excellent.
enjoy the journey, taking time to do your makeup well is an art & an enjoyment. you are naturally creative so you are gonna love it xxx

  4. I must admit, I also become a MAC girl after several years of loving Benefit products. I was a bit intimidated by the MAC concession area in my local Debenhams, as many of the assistants wore very dramatic make-up, but when I told them I preferred a more natural look, they were helpful. I also agree with what others have said about their products lasting a long time too - even though they can be pricey, they last a long time. I also quite like Bare Minerals for foundation too, as you can see a difference in your skin without feeling like your face has been painted with gunk. Only problem I had with Bare Minerals is that I found it didn't seem to last as long on my face as MAC does.

  5. Ah yes, the make up obsession. I am 53 and mine started one year ago. I am just having so much fun with it. I practically have a mini Sephora now. I am serious, I have at least 40 foundations. Lol! I love Dior foundations and powders, NYX or Tarte blushes, Stila eyeshadows, Estee Lauder mascaras, Lancome lipglosses, Kielhs primer, Too Faced lip insurance, and love love love Dior Rouge Couture lipstick (so worth the price.) Have fun!!!

  6. Hi Dibs, coming out of lurkdom to say 'hi' and also just how much I love your look. I'm a similar complexion to you, and have been through my makeup obsession too (also as I entered my thirties). Anyways I found Mac concealers to be good but their foundation a little too heavy for everyday so I turned to Becca for their luminous skin colour foundation in mink (a bit spendy at £32 mind!) and years later it's the one I always go back to despite trying countless others. I'm telling you this now because there are so many options for us darker hues beauties now (wasn't always the case unfortunately) and you can spend a lot.. ask me how I know. Anyways have fun, I think it's cool to reinvent oneself every once in a while.. keeps hubbies guessing! Xx Nnenna

  7. I've never been a big makeup wearer - I've actually been considering whether I could get my eyelashes tinted to avoid having to wear mascara! If I have an interview or am going out for the evening, then I might put some foundation on, because I'm not thrilled with my skin (I use a variety of Benefit products for this, although I've never found a foundation which looks really natural and doesn't make my skin greasy). I've recently discovered Mac eyeliner and eyebrow pencils which are amazing, but not cheap. For my lips, I like Clinique chubby sticks, because they stay on well, don't really smudge and are moisturising.

  8. I have gotten way more into makeup in the last year or two, and I think that has contributed to my lack of sewing! :) It's a lot of fun and help me look better than I ever have, I think. I am always on reddit and there is a section called makeupaddicts, which has lots of tips and trick and swatches, etc.
