How do you do it?

Friday, May 3

I have been trying to take pictures of my Elisalex dress muslin, and I am making a right pork pie out of it. How do other people take such amazing self portraits?

Anyway, I am in the process of making the Elisalex dress. First muslin coming up:

So far so good. The bodice front fits ok. I have not made any adjustments yet, but I have a feeling the back might be a bit dodgy. I tried taking pictures to show what I mean, but of course, I'm not that skilled. I feel it gaps abit at the back. Did anyone else have that problem? Or is it just me?

For the skirt I cut a 14, but then realised I was being overly optimistic about my sizing. I think I might be a 16 for the skirt. Oh well, I need to adjust that, or just go with the gathered skirt. The only reason I made a skirt with this muslin was because I thought the bodice was too short. It is actually ok. Sits exactly on my natural waist, which is a first for me.

I don't know which fabric to use yet. Most of the suitable fabric I have are only 2mts, so a trip to Goldhawk road might just be what I need.

And now, for your eyes only, exhibit A, of my muslin documentation.....See what I go through for this blog?

  4. Dibs, you are so funny :) Try using a tripod and the self-timer. I had the same problems until I learned how the self-timer worked. Can't help with the dress, I don't know the pattern, but it looks fine to me

  5. Haha! You're great!
I love it in that print, it looks better than a muslin to me!
I had gaps at the front, sort of by each armhole, but it was ok at the back so I can't help I'm afraid! I was also worried about the bodice being too short, it seemed so small when I was making it up, but like you it sits perfectly on my waist

  8. XD Nice! Tripod + timer. Or a pile of cereal boxes (Uni reference books work best) and the auto-timer function on your camera.

  9. I will gave the advice than the other, try an tripod. I bought on from amazon and it's really great.
Your muslin is really cute, I don't see any dodginess in the back but maybe you have to do a swayback adjusment. Will you put the sleeves ?

  10. Haha, yes! I just started taking self "portraits" for MMM13 and it's so difficult; don't know how people do it. I like the muslin fabric, by the way.

  11. I love this! I hope you finish it because the print is so cool! It looks like it fits really well! I often ask the mister to take a cell phone pic of the back for me so I can see if it's gaping or not because if I just ask him to tell me, he always says it looks fine, even if it's crazy not fitting.

  12. I love this dress Dibs, I have the same problem as you finding someone to take photos who is actually interested in doing so is not easy. I never thought of putting a camera on my head must try it sometime.

  13. That fabric is lovely - I hope this is going to be a wearable muslin! Due to Me-Made-May I've been feeling your photography woes! I was just thinking today how useful it would be if there was a photography buddy system for sewers which could end impossibly hard self portraits, shall I sign you up ;)

  14. Keywords are words and phrases that prospects type into search engines such as Google,
Yahoo and Bing as they search for the products you offer.
Sites like flippa offer a good way to make some money doing this.
However, you need to be doing much more than just this.
