Vogue 1091 Muslin

Monday, December 12

I have finally bitten the dust, and started actually sewing something. I have so many projects in the pipeline, but for some reason I can't seem to find the motivation to get on the sewing machine.

I decided to start with something I deemed easy. Vogue 1091:

This is a test run. I used a medium weight jersey fabric I bought from Walthamstow market for £3.20/metre. Mr. Dibs was being a grumpy person today, so the pictures are not very good. I refuse to believe it is because he has got toothache, and blocked pores in his eyes. I think he is just jealous I have started sewing again, which only means I will start ignoring him when he comes home from work in the evenings.

So I am sorry about the picture quality.

I really do not think this suits me, as I look like a sac of potatoes. I actually look like I am about to go into labour in this picture. Gosh how huge.

I decided to tie a belt to see if I would look a tad better.

What do you think? Belt or no belt? or do I just give up on the dress?

And to demonstrate how vicious Mr.Dibs was tonight, here's a picture of me looking like I was a part of 28 Days Later. Anyone seen that movie?

The dress itself is really easy to sew and very fast too. I used my overlocker. This can be done in under 2 hours if you are inspired. I decided to use a plain jersey fabric I had at home to see how it would look with a contrasting hem. I cut the sleeves with the borders of the fabric to make it interesting. I'm sure you are wondering why I went to all these lengths to make the dress look nice if it was only going to be a muslin right? I don't know really. I suppose not having actually made anything in a long while pushed me to go crazy on a muslin.

So, what do you think? Yay or Nay?

  3. I think it looks much better than just a muslin, with the belt it looks like a great everyday dress!

  4. It looks better on you with it belted. I'd also look into raising the hemline (about an inch) so it hits you at the knee, instead of just below it.

  5. With the belt, the dress looks fantastic. Without it, it just looks crazy! TFS

  6. With the belt looks much better - it all depends how comfie that belt is for a day's wear, sitting atop your tummy. I agreee with House of Penheiro that the large dot print probably makes things look larger. It's like they're screaming, 'Look how many of us are needed to cover this body!' If you try to imagine this dress in a solid colour, it might look better? Could you even afford to go down a size? There looks like there's quite a bit of excess. Hope these comments help!

  7. It looks better with the belt, but I'd suggest a totally different approach. Try sewing a row of stitch using an elastic thread, just bellow your bust. This way you'll get the empire waist, without having the heavy look the belt gives.

  8. Belt. Definitely Belted. Belted makes you look pregnant and not just obese

  10. I like it better with the belt, but AnaJan's idea is great! I think the elastic would be even better and more comfy!

  11. thanks for the helpful tips ladies. Will definitely go back to the drawing board with this one.
I'll try Anajan's idea and see how that goes. I'll also shorten the hem as Rose suggested.

Karen, I think I cut a size 14 in this, which if I'm not mistaken, is the smallest size on the pattern I ordered. I think it is just the fabric that is wrong for my bump.

  12. The belt look for sure. But Anajan's suggestion should be tried.

Loving that 28 Days Later photo! Gave me quite the chuckle.

  13. Like everybody: with a belt, an elastic thread or a belt with the same fabric, it will be better...

  14. Definitely belt. I like the elastic suggestion or ribbon or fabric tie may be more comfy than a belt? There is lot of potential in the pattern though.

  15. I like it with the belt!
Or how about some elastic stitched round the back waist to pull it in where you are still slim? Although then you might get hem droopage.

  17. I understand how you feel about a bump and loose clothing. I felt like the Titanic by the end of both my pregnancies. But I think the dress can be made to work and the colour and fabric are cute on you. What about adding elastic all the way around under the bust, for a full empire effect? Then wear it with leggings and boots and a cardi. (PS I did not see 28 Days as I was too chicken!)

  18. I'm thinking belt too - but maybe a solid coloured dark one? Like Minnado said maybe wide ribbon so you can let it out for comfort. Like the pictures by the way!!

  19. Belted, definitely. The fabric looks great on you, so don't give up yet! I like the elastic empire line ideas. Go for it.
