Work in Progress: Sewing Room

Monday, May 25

Ever since we moved from London to Northampton last year, I have been looking forward to the day when I would finally sew something in my sewing room. I can't remember if I mentioned this before, but the house we bought had a double length garage, and the old owners converted part of it into a bar, with a proper pub setting. My husband fell in love with the house, I suspect, because he had visions of doing the same thing when we moved in. Unfortunately for him, and since I am awesome, I managed to convince him the room would be better used as my woman cave.

It has taken 9 months, but the sewing room is finally in a state to be used. It is by no means finished, but the foundation has been laid. So here are a few pics of said sewing room.

Machines all laid out on sewing table, next to one of the two bookcases housing my sewing books and magazines.

The husband made a cutting table by doing an Ikea hack using 12 Lack side tables. I totally decided to do this after Mela posted a picture on instagram of her husband and father in law building one for her.

All the fabric I own found a home in an old Ikea wardrobe we had in our old room in London.

And here is the man of the hour with his tools.

My Babylock Enlighten overlocker is giving me life at the moment.

Same goes for this bad boy I won on ebay. The auction was for 213 spools of sew-all thread along with the display case. The person selling them was closing down her business I think. I feel like a proper dressmaker looking at this baby.

There is still some work left especially with my pattern storage. I plan on buying a filling cabinet from an office supply shop to store my patterns, and I also need to find solutions for all my other notions. The space behind my sewing machines is crying out for something. I originally intended to use pegboards there but those things are so scarce here in the UK. I saw a few places selling them for more than I am willing to pay, so I have to rethink that.

I also need to buy a new iron, and think of a way to have a pressing station . For now, all my pressing tools and rulers have been placed under my cutting table. I also need a few wall shelves and wall art. Slowly but surely, I will get there.

How do you organise your sewing notions?

In other news, I spent last saturday at the Millenium Hotel in Mayfair, London, having afternoon tea with a couple of my friends, for my baby shower. My friend and I decided to do a joint baby shower as we are due a week apart. I am currently 34 weeks preggers, and I feel it.

I totally deserved that glass of champers. Its been a long 34 weeks.

What have you all been up to? Anyone working on a sewing room makeover?

Blogging and Life

Monday, May 12

The new year always starts with so much promise. This year I was quite hopeful about my blog. I was going to be sewing and posting every week, not simple sewing mind you, no, not good enough for moi. I was going to be making well crafted pieces, boning and all. Ha! Here we are, going into the middle of the year, and I have nothing to show for it.  Where did all the days go? More importantly, why have I not been sewing, or blogging?

The truth of the matter is, unless blogging is your full time job, you need to dig deep down to find motivation to blog regularly. I am not saying it cannot be done, we all know there are fabulous bloggers out there who have demanding jobs, but still blog regularly like it was easier than making a cup of tea. To those bloggers, I raise my cap. I, on the other hand, really struggle. Ever since Noah came on the scene, things have gone pear shaped sewing wise (no pun intended). Again, I am not saying you can't blog successfully when/if you have kids, as there are mega bloggers out there with more kids than I can count on my two hands. How do they do it? How do you do it? Any tips for a struggling sister?

I struggle with finding time to sew, or blog. Somehow, sewing and blogging have been relegated to the bottom of my to do list. I just don't have the time, and I realise I need to make more of an effort but it is just so hard. There are a couple of things which are responsible for this inactivity, which I will briefly  touch on.

Since August 2013, we have been trying to sell our matchbox flat. Our little family is growing, and we no longer have space to breathe in our flat. We had multiple offers for our flat the first day of viewings, and found a lovely new house for ourselves. Unfortunately, our buyer was a first time buyer, and unbeknownst  to us, had not even secured a mortgage. A couple of months later, the chain broke, so we were back to square one. In January we put our house once more on the market, and sold for 5k above our asking price on the first day of viewings. We decided to move to Milton Keynes, and found a lovely house which I could not stop dreaming about. Turns out it was not meant to be. Our house sale fell through again because of the damp in our house. The heartbreak this time was even more painful because I had already strong armed Mr.Dibs into letting me convert one of the rooms into a sewing room. Needless to say, I did not want to see my sewing machine because it reminded me of things that were not to be. We have since fixed the damp, and thousands of pounds later, our house is going back on the market today. I am trying work some excitement into the process but to be honest, I am struggling with that as well. I don't think I will be able to handle another disappointment.

On a more positive note, one other thing that has been fighting for my time, is my obsession with macarons. I wrote a post about them earlier this year, and my love for them has only increased. So much so that I have decided to start selling them. I have been doing alot of research on how I want to proceed with my macaron business, and what brand image I want, packaging, distribution and the usual suspects. It is fun, and scary at the same time. I am going to Paris in June to study this course at Ferrandi, a French culinary school. My friend is getting married in June, and she wants me to make a macaron tower for her, so exciting times ahead. Plus, I will need your help sometime soon, I plan on hosting a macaron tasting party so we can all decide on the flavours I will be selling. If you think you could help with that please drop me a note in the comments box.

I also decided to loose some weight. I joined the gym, and so I go some days after work, which means I don't have enough time after work to sew. I currently work in Maidenhead, so by the time I get back to London, all I want to do is eat and pass out. I have good days and bad days, and I have had a cold twice in 30 days, which has broken my motivation to go to the gym. I am hoping to get back on track this month. I have lost a bit of weight though, as you can see from the picture below.

So there you have it. My gazillion reasons for not keeping in touch. I don't even know when I will get back to sewing as my weekends are already fully booked till the end of June. I am on the lookout for a Babylock overlocker though, so if/when I do buy it, the excitement of a new machine might translate into me actually sewing something.

I have been buying fabric though. That is the one constant in my life. My fabric obsession. I am so looking forward to summer because of all the maxi wearing opportunities I will have.

Oh, one more thing, how do you manage the demands on your time and life, with sewing and blogging?

Keeping Fit and Sewing

Monday, May 6

Mr.Dibs finally got me into those £100 running shoes. I am expecting miracles from those shoes. I have every intention of becoming the next Mo Farah.  Pardon me for sounding cheap, but the price of those shoes still hurt me. Can you imagine how much fabric £100 can get me in a place like Walthamstow market?, or the number of patterns I could buy? or quality thread?

Anway, I was kitted up yesterday by Mr.Dibs, and we went running. By that, of course, I mean Mr.Dibs ran, and I dragged myself painfully behind him. I ran 1.5miles yesterday at possibly the slowest pace known to man, but no matter, I was still very tired by the time I managed to limp home.

I know a number of you are runners. Any advice for me? Seeing that my goal for running is to loose weight, I know I have to eat right as well, so any tips on combining exercising and dieting for a healthy weight loss regime?

Naturally this current drive of mine (via pressure from Mr.Dibs) to loose weight would have had serious implications for my bank account, because the more you loose weight, the more you have to spend on a new wardrobe right? However, Sandra made a great comment on my last post . She said the advantage of sewing your own clothes is that you can adjust it when you put on weight. True enough. That goes for loosing weight as well. Another reason to be happy I sew then dont'cha think?

Which brings me to another question, when you are on a mission to loose weight, how do you buy sewing patterns? Do you buy your current size, or do you buy your desired size and and use that as motivation to reach said desired size. I know some women who buy dresses a size or two smaller, and diet their way to that size. Do you do the same with your pattern buying?

In other news, I have started work on my Elisalex dress. I am using a fabric I bought from Goldhawk road 2 years ago. We are hoping to sell our house soon, so I Want to reduce my fabric stash. It is either that, or throw fabric away. Mr.Dibs is being totally unreasonable about my fabric stash. The way he is going on about it taking up space, is roasting my nerves. His current mantra is "Use it or Bin it". Needless to say, I have no intention of "binning" precious fabric. I did bin some scraggy looking fabric though, those I bought at the beginning.

Its a Bank holiday today, and the sun is shinning, and I am one happy woman. I should be sewing, but I think I need Vitamin D more. I do need a zip for my Elisalex dress though, so John Lewis, here I come.

Paris and a Milestone

Saturday, April 13

Yes Paris!

I went to Paris for the first time last month, and I was absolutely enchanted. Unfortunately I do not have pictures of the city, but you can google it, and I can assure you, millions of pictures will pop up.

I went for my alumni reunion, and decided to hang out with some cool peeps, just because I'm cool like that...you know?. I went on a Friday, but met up with Veronica and Sandra on Sunday, for what turned out to be an amazing day ( thanks girls).

So, on Sunday, I was picked up from my hotel by Veronica, who treated me to some French crepe, and believe me, I have never tasted crepes so good. Why don't we make them like this in London? We met up with Sandra later, and then drove to a fabric market in another town called Sarcelles. Again, I do not have pictures of our time here because Sandra and Veronica were quite vocal about not wanting me to take my camera into the market. Thieves you know! So if you need someone to blame for any lack of pictorial evidence, you know where to look.

Feeling Reflective

Monday, February 4

So it is the start of the new year, and all around the sewing blogosphere, people are signing up to various sew-alongs and pledging to undertake projects. I think I have signed up to 1 or two myself, and you will be shocked to hear I have not even started a single one of these projects. Why do I do this? Why do we do it? I am most certain I am not the only one who gets excited when some new project comes up, or some sew-along, signs up, then promptly forgets about it, or just cannot make the time to follow up and actually partake in said sew-along.

Why do you do it?

Is it to have a sense of belonging? to force ourselves to actually make something by partaking in a strict sewing program? to make new friends? to increase our blog readership?

One more thing, why do we choose certain patterns over others? why do we rush to make the latest independent pattern even when we know it is not our style, or does not suit our body type? I have bought patterns in the past just because I saw it made on a blog I follow, and then filed them away and never looked at them again...well not true, I do look at them, and marvel at my foolishness.

Another Birthday and a give away

Friday, November 30

So yes. I am not dead yet. Was too scared to kick the bucket. I am well and trully alive, and in a much better place. Thank you to all of you who had me in your thoughts and prayers, and who reached out to me via this blog and email. I am so grateful. I took alot of what you all said on board, and especially enjoyed putting some of them into practice ( eating chocolates anyone), and as a result, I think I have to come up with a new set of measurements for myself as my tops don't button up anymore.

It is also that day of the year. You know, the day that makes you reflect on your life, your purpose on earth and all. I turned 32 today. Nothing major. I got a new present. Two actually and two cheques. The presents are drying up me thinks.

First up, a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. Yeah yeah, you don't have to gasp so loud. I can hear you from here. Jealous? hehehe. A couple of you suggested I do something like start a new hobby to get me out of my dark maze. So, I decided on graphic and web design as the new thing I want to learn. Actually this might not come as a surprise to some of you who have been reading my blog for some time. I am always playing with the look of my blog, tweaking a code here or there, html here, CSS there. This subscription gives me access to Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamweaver and a host of other software by Adobe. Cool huh?

Sometimes we are each others pillars

Sunday, November 11

Hi all, this post is somewhat personal so if you do not like to read sob stories, I highly suggest you stop reading NOW. You've been warned.

I read this post on Mimi G's blog, and something she said touched me so much. The whole post was so inspiring to read, and the last paragraph read like it was meant for me. The exact line I have been repeating to myself since I read the post is:

"...it doesn't matter how you started out it only matters how you finish" - Mimi G

So yes, we are all each other's pillars sometimes.

Lately I have not been posting regularly. Yes I know, you are all aware of that.

Have I been fooling myself?

Wednesday, October 31

Seriously, Have I?

Source

The time has come for me to go back to work, and I have just discovered I do not have anything to wear to work. Not literally of course, but I am sure I can only assemble 5 items I could consider wearing to work. Which makes me question what I have been doing all this while. What have I been sewing? Why do I have more fabric than clothes? Have I been fooling myself? Have I pushed things too far? For the past year, I have been entering shops and giving people superior stares when they rush to pay for clothes, saying to myself " I can make that". I know I can make "that", but did I?

Little Updates

Monday, October 8

Saturday has come and gone, and you are hearing from me. That only means I did not damage my wool crepe fabric, and I am still alive and well.

I did not make the dress. I decided instead to put it on hold till I get the fit well and truly perfect. I am going to enlist the help of my mom, who will be coming to the UK on Tuesday from Cameroon.

I also started a new blog.

For those of you who have not met me, or have met me and not noticed (very unlikely), I stammer( stutter, if you are American). My stammer has been such a big part of my life. Many highs and lows. Mostly lows. From growing up in Cameroon, where the condition is not really understood, and people openly laugh at you, and make fun of you, and insult you, to living and finding work in the UK where people do not consider it a disability because it is not a visibly physical, and thinking you are just plain dumb during interviews.

My new blog is called The Covert Stammerer, and it will be about my stammer. I don't want to wax lyrical about my stammer here, so if you think it is something you might want to know more about, please do drop by, and say hello.

A little blog update

Friday, September 21

Hi folks, as you may have noticed, my blog is undergoing some changes. I am doing it myself, so I am currently immersing myself in html codes and CSS declarations. I don't know how the blog will look like, as I  am constantly changing things. This is what I have done so far. Expect some disruptions in the coming days. Hopefully everything should be done and dusted by saturday.

To Europe to Europe, I'm going to Europe

Saturday, June 30

Pardon my post title. I did not know what else to name this post.

I am going to mainland Europe ( I like to think of myself as an Islander here in the UK) end of July, for three weeks, and I have plans of going to Belgium-Netherlands-France, maybe squeeze in Germany. More specifically I am thinking Antwerp- The Hague - Amsterdam- Paris and finally Cologne if my cousin has some spare time. She's a doctor, and apparently Doctors are overworked in Germany.

In Belgium, I do not have plans to do alot of fabric shopping because last time that I went to visit my cousin in Antwerp, I did not really see any shops worth going back to. I am not saying they are not there....they probably are, but I did not know where they were. Is anyone reading this post based   in either Brussels or Antwerp who knows of cool fabric hide outs?

Noah came Early

Monday, April 2

Yes he did.

Technically he was supposed to finish baking on the 4th of April, however due to little technicalities, which I have moaned about non-stop on this blog, and which I am sure you all got tired of hearing about, the head chef decided to pull him out of the oven 1 week early, on the 27th of March.

So, I'll be brief. I am so sleepy I swear I could sleep in a chocolate making factory right now.....and NO, not even the chocolate can tempt me away from sleep right now....after I finish this post of course.

A rather pleasant surprise!!

Wednesday, February 8

That is what I got yesterday when I woke up in the morning, reached for my phone, and checked my email.

On Monday, as I lay on the bed, legs stretched out (my customary position these days as I am kinda restricted in the mobility side of things), I came across this give away post by Ginger Makes. Ginger was expressing her gratitude to the sewing community and how lucky she was feeling because she had just won two give aways, one of which was this dress from Pattern Runway.

Does it have to be so cold in London?

Sunday, February 5

No, I am not whinging, I am singing. Does anyone remember The Cranberries?

They have this song called " So cold in Ireland" which I loved. In fact I love all their songs, and in various stages of my life, I have bought (again) , all 5 of their albums. They have a new album coming out this month, so naturally I am quite excited. I got introduced to The Cranberries by a friend when I was 17, in Cameroon, and had just gone to university. The album I borrowed from my friend was their second album "No Need To Argue". By the end of my first year at Uni, all my neighbours at the hostel were Cranberries converts. Yes, I played it everyday on the loudest volume. I know that sounds unfair now, but back then i was young, and carefree, and MAD!!!

Catford Sewing and Knitting Group

Tuesday, January 24

Hi folks, thank you so much for the lovely words of support you all gave me regarding my missed trip to Scotland, and the health issues behind it. It means a lot to me to know that I have friends out there who care. The fact that I have not even met all of you yet makes it all the more special.

You all have the eternal gratitude of Mr.Dibs, who woke up at 6:30am on Saturday morning to the sounds of me crying on the phone to House of Pinheiro , who was on her way to the airport, and trying her best to console this hysterical person on the other side of the line. After she managed to calm me down, and we hung up, all Mr.Dibs could say was “she sounds really nice”, to which I snapped “They are all very nice”. He got a better understanding of my last statement when I told him the girls were sending me a parcel through Houseof Pinheiro. How can you not love being a part of such a generous and loving sewing community?

Which brings me to a more serious matter.....

St.Laurence Church, Catford.
Home of the Catford Sewing and Knitting Group.

A couple of days ago, I got an email from a lovely lady called Delphina, telling me about a new sewing and knitting group in Catford, in South London, which will go into operation at the end of the month. It is council-funded ( how cool is that?), and it is completely free to join. However, since it is Council funded, priority is given to Lewisham borough residents. Delphina did point out the fact that they have space for 12-15 people, so she’s certain of the fact that a few non-residents might also be included.

Unfortunately, I live very far from Catford, but I am sure one of you might be able to take advantage of this wonderful initiative. I wish I had one like this in my borough.

So here are few FAQs about the Catford Sewing and Knitting Group.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) How much does it cost?

Nothing! We are a 'not-for-profit' community group funded by Lewisham Council. However, space is limited so we operate 'first-come-first-served' at tables.

2) Where do you meet?

From 11am - 5.30pm (6pm final close), every Saturday, except the 3rd Sat of each month, in the 'Youth Room' at St Laurence Hall, Bromley Road (http://www.stlaurencecatford.org.uk/index.html).
FULL LIST OF DATES CAN BE FOUND AT THE END OF THIS POST

3) Do you teach sewing, knitting, embroidery, crochet etc?

We do not teach classes in sewing, knitting, embroidery or crochet. We are an informal drop-in for people who already know how to pattern cut, sew, knit, crochet or embroider and are confident in completing projects on their own. We provide a supportive environment only.

4) Do you provide sewing machines?

No. Our small budget does not cover this. Everyone must bring their own sewing or knitting machine, materials and yarn. We also do not provide spare needles, scissors or bobbins.
Rolls & Rems dressmaking shop in Lewisham is a 10-min bus ride away and stocks an impressive range of fabrics, yarns and haberdashery items at affordable prices.

5) Do you allow children?

For Health & Safety reasons, we cannot allow children under 16 in the room.

6) Is there wheelchair access?

Yes. St Laurence has full wheelchair access.

7) What facilities are there?

The room can hold approx. 12-15 people in all. We have one cutting table, a dummy, a steam iron, ironing board and full-length mirror. Please note: St Laurence has no wifi.

8) Do you provide refreshments?

We can provide a limited supply of tea and coffee.

9) Can I bring my own lunch?

Yes, sandwiches are fine. You must take your rubbish away with you. Catford High Street has a wide range of eateries and a large Tesco if you prefer to go out for lunch.

10) Is there parking?

Yes. St Laurence has parking in the rear for approx 25 cars. If this is full, the nearby streets of Culverly Road and Penerly Road are free to park on a Saturday. Just make double sure you are not on a line or blocking anyone's driveway!

11) What buses/trains stop nearby?

If using public transport, we recommend you use a sturdy trolley or suitcase to bring your machine, fabrics and sewing box. Catford is well served by two rail stations and many bus routes stop near the hall; http://www.stlaurencecatford.org.uk/wherearewe.html

*********************
PLEASE NOTE: Any table left unattended for 45 mins will be given to the next person waiting.
Your machine and materials will be carefully removed and stored for when you come to collect.
You join the group on this understanding.

Have a lovely week everyone.

A little bit of biology

Saturday, January 21

Saturday 21st January 2012.

That is the date of today.

I'm not saying you don't know what today's date is.

I am just saying it is Saturday 21st January 2012.

In my Calendar, it is marked "Crafter's Ceilidh"

Yes, the same one blogged about here.

The same one that was supposed to provide me with 1 final bout of fabric related excitement before I became  too heavy to wobble anywhere.

Following the natural order of things, I would have been sitting on a train en route to Edinburgh, via Darlington, to meet-up with some lovely ladies. I had made up numerous scenarios on how I would scream when I met the other girls, right down to the pitch of my voice when I finally said "Hi, I'm Dibs, and its so nice to finally meet you" to people I have  been admiring for some time. I even had a dream about meeting Roobeedoo, yeah Roo, thats how much of a fan I am.

What I did not count on though, was the small matter of biology. I was so sure the only thing that could possibly stop me from going to Edinburgh would be a really expensive train ticket. I did get a really good deal on my train ticket, so all I had to do was cross my legs and wait for today to arrive.

My body however, had other plans. I have been having mobility problems lately. This started to get worse just after christmas, and even though I have spent more time at home than at work since the start of this year, I was so positive I would be better by today. And so I let my excitement grow. On monday, as I was limping to work, the guard at the gate gave me a sympathetic look, and said I should not have come in to work. I smiled indulgently, and wobbled along.

My manager upon seeing me hanging unto the walls for support as I made numerous mandatory bladder emptying trips, quickly ordered a taxi for me to go right back home, with strict instructions not to come to work until I had seen a doctor.

I did see a doctor, and she told me I was suffering from Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction. Yes....I thought the same thing you are probably thinking right now. What a fancy name, for a not very fancy ailment. When I went home, I checked online, and found this description from www.babycentre.co.uk

What is symphysis pubis dysfunction?

The two halves of your pelvis are connected at the front by a stiff joint called the symphysis pubis. This joint is strengthened by a dense network of tough, flexible tissues, called ligaments. To help your baby pass through your pelvis as easily as possible, your body produces a hormone called relaxin, which softens the ligaments.

As a result, these joints move more during and just after pregnancy, causing inflammation and pain, known as symphysis pubis dysfunction or SPD.

The result of this, my friends, is that I am now reduced to using my phone to call Mr.Dibs, who is almost always watching The Big Bang Theory, and asking him to bring me a glass of water in bed. If I have to empty my treacherous bladder, I either have to creep to the bathroom, or reach for my phone and call Mr.Dibs to report to the room for his ever increasing Florence Nightingale duties.

I'm sorry if you rather not be reading my unglamorous health problems, but I am just so disappointed I am not presently in Scotland, that I wanted to share my pain.......yes, I am that mean.

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the event. I don't know how I will feel seeing all the fun I am missing now, but I can't wait to see them. How pathetic is that? Mr. Dibs said I will get to go to other meet-ups, that my life does not have to end when Noah comes along, and that he could look after him while I met everyone on the blogoshpere. True I know, but it will not be the same. It will not be the Crafter's Ceilidh.

What about you? Have you ever made plans for an event and ended up not going?

Have a nice weekend everyone.,,,oops, time for another blowing session into my tear soaked hanky.

The Gift that keeps Giving

Tuesday, December 27

Hi folks, how are you all? I trust you have recovered from the excesses of the festive season. I know we are still in the “season”, but surely now that the actual day has come and gone, I think it’s safe to say it’s all over right? This year Mr Dibs dragged me and Junior Messrs’ Dibs (born and unborn) up to his village. Mr Dibs grew up in a lovely little village called Heighington in the North East of England, and he always gets excited when we go up North. The weather in the North of England is usually worse than what we have down South, and it’s been known to snow up there long before we get snow in the South. This year however, there was no snow, which I thought was nice. I do not handle cold weather very well. Last year was really cold, and we had snow even in London and as a result, I spent Christmas week in bed, with a nasty flu. I was hoping for better tidings this year, as there was no snow on the horizon. Alas, I was still to suffer the same ailment as last year. I spent this Christmas week as well under the weather, and I am still trying to recover from the flu. It’s even worse this year because due to a certain bump, I am not allowed to take strong drugs to fight off the flu. I have been religiously drinking a mixture of hot water, lemon, honey, ginger and ground paracetamol. It actually helped, although my illness is dragging on for longer than it would have if I was actually allowed to take stronger medicines.

Its Stuff like this that makes me wonder why I live in The UK

Monday, December 5

I am sorry guys. This is not a sewing related post, but I just had to share this video with you.

I do not understand how a woman would carry an innocent baby on her legs, and then go on to spew such nonsense.

I am not even going to make this video about racism because she talks about Polish people as well. All I can say is that as a hard working immigrant, it pains me to see someone talk like this. The colour of my skin should not  give people the right to assume that I am not deserving to be in this country. It is rather unfortunate that I am going to be here for the rest of my life because of Mr.Dibs. That is a bad thought to have, but I can't help having it. I hate negativity but people like this make it impossible for me to be positive all the time.

I came to the UK 6 years (2005) ago to go to school. My intention was not to remain in the UK. Far from it. I have a wonderful family back home whom I miss dearly. My dad died in 2007 without me seeing him. That is the most painful thing that has ever happened to me, not seeing him before he passed away. I did not choose to run away from my country. I came here to get a good education so I could go home and help advance my country. I do not claim state benefits. I have worked for all 6 years  that I have been here, and I have paid my taxes. I did not come to the UK to sponge off the British people. I paid £11,000 for a 1 year Masters degree. That is more than 3 times the amount a British student pays. I did not complain. I did that because I know the educational system here is amongst the best in the World.

Yes racism exists! Yes I have noticed a marked increase in the number of job interviews I get since my surname changed from an African one to a British one. And yes I have witnessed enthusiastic interviewers (following a phone interview) visibly going into shock when I walk into an interview room and trying unsuccessfully to hide their shock that I was black. That never bothered me because I know as human beings, we gravitate more towards, or have a preference for people who look or sound like us. But this video does. This is a clear example of a mother poisoning the mind of a baby. I can't even imagine what that child will grow up to think if his mother persists in her hatred for all things foreign.

I suppose I am rambling now, but it pains me to know that things like this still exist in the world. Is this the kind of society my baby will grow up in?

Have a nice week everyone.

1 year closer to being a Lady of a certain age!!

Wednesday, November 30

So, people, today I turned 31.

There's nothing spectacular about 31.

Its not like turning sweet 16, so full of innocence and hope for the future, and finding all sorts of ways to combine your name and that of your crush...In my case I was locked up in an all girls boarding school, so there was no boy to make doe eyes at....I did have a mega crush on my Head teacher's son, but as I recently found out, Mr.Dibs DOES read my blog, so I shall not give the juicy details of that crush here....ahem...I intend to stay married forever.

Its not like turning 20, when you consider 19 too young ( teenagers anyone?), and you feel ready to conquer the world with your dreams....at this point I was reading law at uni and skipping class all the time to go to pubs with my boyfriend......said boyfriend was my highschool crush from above paragraph, but I promised......shhh, Mr.Dibs might be reading this on his commute from work as soon as I post it.

Its not like being 25, too old to make the same mistakes from your younger years without thinking SERIOUSLY, this time, of the impending consequences. In my case I decided to quit my job as an Account Manager in a leading advertising agency to come to the UK to do my Masters so I can return and earn even more money. 6 years on, I'm still here. The consequences of that decision? A Masters degree in IT and Management, a job in Marketing, a husband ( poor soul) and seriously knocked up.

And its not like the big 30, which I turned last year, but was too sick with a cold to go into town and be a bad girl. Its just another year added , which takes you ever so closely to being a Lady of a Certain age.

Today, my 31st birthday, though relatively insignificant, was destined, by events beyond my control, to be the one I will most likely think of every time my birthday comes around. Today, my dear friend, whose baby shower I attended a couple of weeks ago, had a cute baby girl. I have not seen Miya yet, but I love her already. She is going to be a very special little lady in my heart and life because not only is her mother one of my closest friends, but Miya is also my birthday partner, and everytime I look at her, I will remember my 31st birthday. Yes, the insignificant 31st birthday has become the one which will be remembered, pour toujours!!

Baby news aside, what else made today special for me were the gifts i received. Oh the gifts. I'm still giddy with joy.

First up, Mr.Dibs got me these.....

A supa dupa fly manicure and pedicure set because.......

.......for the first time in my life I have nails......

When I was younger, I developed the bad habit of biting my fingernails. A habit I have tried to stop unsuccessfully, until now. This is due in part to my pregnancy hormones which have made my nails hard as nails, and increased its growth speed. I tried to bite them once, and almost lost my front teeth....so not cool..... So Monsieur Dibs got me this set to congratulate me, as well as to encourage me to keep beautiful nails.

Dremel Versatip, which will be useful for jewellery making as it is a butane gas.....

So many possibilities with this little monster......

Glue for.........

Dremel glue gun.....all to add to my already owned.......

Dremel engraver..........

Can you notice the dremel hobby obsession thing going on here? Now all that is missing for me is the hobby table.....Christmas stocking anyone?

Then money from his parents got me this

Xyron Design runner.....I am so looking forward to ribbon priniting....

These two are wending their way to me right now. Mr. Post man is being a naughty boy....

Xyron creative station

Xyron sticker maker

I got myself these just because......

Then I got surprised at work with this

A sewing box...yay!!

and some chocolate cake......yummy!!!

So a good day for me. I have not done any household chores today because its MY BIRTHDAY, and I can do what I want today. Birthdays are so cool right? imagine being treated this way everyday of the year....oh well maybe not....but we should have more days when everyone dots on you. One of my friends celebrates her birthday month....a whole month, can you imagine. I'm talking to you Vicks, I know you are reading this right now!!

And I leave you , with this song by Neil Hannon called "Lady of a Certain Age".

Blogger Meet-up and the day I grew up.....

Saturday, November 19

Ok so I'm already old, and my wisdom teeth are threatening to fall off any time soon, but today , I realised I had become a grown up....fabric wise.

As I announced yesterday, I was on a very serious mission today. Meeting up with fellow sewing bloggers is always a big thing with me, as I get to meet other people who help me justify my fabric addiction. Afro wig in place, I met up with Stevie and the gang at the Goldhawk Road Station. "The Gang" included people I had met before like Santie and Claire , and people like Alana, Nikki and Steph who I was meeting for the first time, though it seemed like we'd known each other before, because we all felt really comfortable with each other ( at least I did).

L-R: Santie, Alana, Nikki, Steph, Stevie and Claire.

Goofing around with the Maxwell bump!!
I was quite impressed when we entered the first shop and Santie whipped out her shopping list.
This is how to concentrate ladies!!
We went through the shops on one side of the street, and decided to have some lunch because at this point, I was almost passing out from hunger. A big thank you to Claire, who had the foresight, as always, to sensibly come along with some emergency chocolate bars. I very much doubt I would have been able to last till Vesbar for lunch, had Claire not taken pity on me and offered me one bar of Wispa.

Hungry women pondering the menu

Cocktails galore!!!

After eating and catching up, we decided to hit the other side of Goldhawk Road. I must at this juncture point out the fact that many more purchases were made post lunch. I think those concerned will agree with me that those little cocktails did help to make their fingers more nimble, which led to notes being withdrawn from wallets without hesitation, and four digit codes being punched into payment devices with such agility and swiftness that even Usain Bolt would have struggled to keep up.

Since I am presently handicapped on the alcohol front, I was more careful. This, I can assure you, had nothing to do with the fact that its the end of the month and I am most spectacularly broke. I want to assume I have become so wise in my fabric buying ways that I can now resist the lure of cheap fabric. Did I mention I was broke?

So I got 2metres this purple viscose jersey to make my vogue dress.....

at a good price .......I paid £9 for two metres.

and 2metres of this glazed cotton fabric for £3.50/metre. This fabric was such a big hit, with the girls, and I think about 4 of us bought this.

I also bought 2 bundles of 100g acrylic yarn (£2.50 each) to make two snoods. I just loved the colours.

After leaving the girls, I went to John Lewis at Oxford street to find some clear elastic to use on my Vogue dress. Unfortunately, having dragged my now very tired body to Oxford street, I discovered John Lewis did not have clear elastic. I now have no other option but to order it online...yikes. I really wanted to make the dress tomorrow but as it is, I will have to wait until the post man brings me some clear elastic.

Shoulders slumped, I made my way back home. Normally, when I get home and Mr.Dibs is already there, I like to ring the bell for him to open the door for me. I have my own set of keys, but why use them when its so much more satisfying knowing that he will stop whatever it was he was doing, to open the door for me? ( hihihihihihi). Today however, because I had some fabric to hide, I quietly opened the door, sneaked into our bedroom, and shoved my bags under the bed....fear not folks, he readeth not my blog.......then I went to the living room, making sure to limp my way to the couch as soon as I knew I was within eyesight of Mr. and junior Dibs, put my legs up, and wait for dinner. The power of the bump folks, the power of the bump.

Have a good night everyone....
