Skirting the issue

Happy New Year people!

How have you all been? Hope the new year has started well. Well it certainly has for me. I made a skirt. Its an easy project, so technically might not impress all you good people out there, but I am happy. You will all know I have not made anything lately, so I wanted to start with something light. This will hopefully make me get my sewing groove on.

Last year was pretty uneventful on the sewing front, and I have to continously tell myself there was nothing I could do to sew more things last year. Yeah, I've been feeling pretty inadequate, especially with all the sewing recaps I have seen popping up on blogs to mark the end of 1 year, and the beginning of another. So, to all of you who have done such posts, thanks for making me feel guilty and lazy. I hate you all. Well not really, your productivity more likely. 

This year, I am not making any fancy pancy sewing plans. All I want to do is sew more skirts. They are easy, and quick, and great wardrobe fillers. You see people, I recently got a new job, which I will be starting in February, so I need to get a new look. I'm not obliged to, but I want to. It will do me good methinks, to have a new wardrobe. So yeah, new year, new job, and, I am hoping, new wardrobe.

I used quilting cotton that I bought on sale from John Lewis. I am cheap you know. It was going for £6.50/metre I think. The fabric is by Joel Dewberry, and it is the rose bouquet in gold from the Heirloom collection. It was really easy to sew, and it feels very soft to the touch. I shall be visiting dear old Johnny L in the not to distant future for more quilting cottons.

I did not use a pattern, but followed Gertie's instructions on making a gathered skirt. I like the way it turned out, but I don't like the way the zip is placed. She has you insert the zip after the band has been attached, and you leave the zip ends exposed . It does not matter on the outside, but I know it is exposed on the inside, and I personally don't like it. So when I am making it next, I shall sew the zip on before I attach the band. It really is one of the easiest things to make, and since I intend to have many skirts this year, I shall definitely be making more.

One more thing.To those who won stuff in my recent giveaway, I am yet to post out your prizes. I'm sorry it has taken this long, but I had to prepare long and hard for my interviews over the christmas period, so needless to say, going to the post office was not top of my activity list. I shall be sending them out to you this week. Hope you understand.
