So, my excitement over the new overlocker has gone down(just a teensy weeny bit), and I am testing it. I'm currently working on another vogue 8232 dress, and I'm really happy with how professional it looks inside because of the overlocking. My regular machine has an overlocker foot, but the results are so much better with the overlocker. The speed for instance, is out of this world, and I was quite surprised when I went back on my sewing machine and noticed how slow it was in comparison to the overlocker.
I was quite lucky that the overlocker came already threaded, but when I started sewing, I noticed something was not quite right. Upon closer inspection I realised one of the threads was not there, so I had to rethread it. That took me a good part of 1 hour, and that was just 1 thread. In the end, it all made sense.I think threading the overlocker is not as scary as we all think. Doing it the first time might be daunting, but when you get the hang of it, it becomes easy.
So, if like me you were scared of using one, the best way to overcome this, is to buy one, and just go for it. It's not as hardcore as we think.

ReplyDeleteYay! Well done you. Has anyone told you that nifty trick for changing the thread? The one where you tie the new thread to the tail end of the old thread, run the machine on a scrap of fabric, and it will pull the new thread through as it sews. No fiddly re-threading required! I was soooo impressed when our tutor did this. Of course, it's only any use if the old thread is there to begin with. You have to tie it a particular way too, or the knot can get stuck.

ReplyDeleteCyberdaze, its not an easy decision, especially as they are not cheap,but you will be very happy when you do get one. it makes a VERY big difference. whats the make of your machine? i just went with Pfaff because I think i liked my machine. Some people swear by brother, and others say its not worth it. In the end, its all down to personal choice really. But if you can, try to go to dealers where you can test run them before making up your mind.

ReplyDeleteI've had an overlocker for over a year now and am not sure what I ever did without it. Oh wait, I still do wear clothes I made pre-overlocker so it's easy to remember :)

ReplyDeleteA useful addition to your sewing machine maintenance box is some fine fuse wire. Great for bendy angled threading of an overlocker.
