About

My name is Dibs (No really, it is my name), and I like to make stuff.

My first stab at sewing occurred when I had to go to university and my mother refused to sew my beddings, and instead showed me how to use her vintage Singer machine. I could have moved on from sewing bedsheets to clothes, but I was much too busy savouring the freedom of staying on my own, and researching the delights of co-education after spending 7 years in an all-girls Christian boarding school.

Fast forward a couple of years to 2008, I decided I wanted to learn how to sew, and somehow fell on Burdastlye. I spent a couple of months just looking at what people were doing and getting inspired, but promptly forgot about it when I went back to school to do my postgraduate degree. 1 year later, after my degree, my husband (then fiancée) gifted me with my first sewing machine and I was good to go.

I am originally from Cameroon, but I call the UK home now, as I managed to find an unsuspecting man to marry me...poor thing, he is only just realising I am not the domestic goddess I pretended I was. He keeps making me watch cooking programs on telly, and I keep telling him to keep the faith.

I love bright colours and bold prints, and I love dresses. I sew from the big four and Burda magazine, but I have also started using more independent pattern companies. One day, hopefully, I will be able to make my own patterns, and wear whatever I want.

This blog is a reflection of who I really am, and I hope my personality shines through. I am still a beginner, and I learn something new everyday from books and the wonderful online sewing community. My fabric stash keeps growing, and I am finding it more and more difficult to invent ways  of smuggling new fabric purchases past my husband, so if you have a method that works for you, please do share as all my old tricks have been busted.

I love meeting new people, and I am always up for a meet-up. So if you find yourself in London one day and would like to hang out in fabric shops or just to see my pearly white teeth, drop me a line, and I will try to make it happen.
